Finger plays are so important for babies! I love to do finger plays with my baby. As he’s getting closer to turning one, I don’t do them as often, but they are easy to adapt as he gets older.
Johnny Whoops is a cute finger play that helps babies with their body awareness. It’s especially fun when they are fascinated with their hands and fingers.
To begin, you just need to take baby’s hand. You’ll go finger by finger (each “Johnny” uses a new finger), beginning with their pinky.
It goes like this:
Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny Whoops!
Johnny Whoops, Johnny Johnny Johnny Johnny
The “whoops” happens between the thumb and pointer finger. With older kids, you can ask why Johnny says “whoops” and see what ideas they have.
Here are a few other ideas:
- use different names in place of Johnny (children love using their own names, or names of cousins/friends, etc.)
- use toes instead of fingers
- make up a story about what Johnny is doing
- experiment with using your voice different ways as you say the poem
Have fun and be creative! I’d love to hear other ideas you have for this poem!
