Last week, I shared about the Carnival of the Animals unit I am doing with my 1st graders at school. We have been listening to The Aquarium and have been doing activities having to do with fish. This next week, we will be listening to The Elephant and doing elephant themed activities. We will be coloring elephant pictures, listening to Baby Elephant Walk, and doing elephant movement activities.

At home, I found a book my son got for Christmas called Dear Zoo, given to him by our friend who is a librarian. She used to be a children’s librarian and she always finds the best books!
The story is about a child who writes a letter to the zoo asking them to send a pet, and then they send a series of animals. It happens to go perfectly with the Carnival of the Animals unit we have been doing at school, so I thought it would be fun to sing songs for each of the animals in the story.
I really like that the book is a lift-the flap rather than a pop up book. My son loves trying to open the flaps of the book to see the different animals.
My son is at the age where his vocabulary is exploding, and he loves making different animals sounds after proclaiming the animals in each picture.
The song we are using with this story so far is 5 Little Monkeys (when the zoo sends a monkey). I’m still looking for an elephant song to use. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them! The songs we are listening to this week at school are a little too old for my almost 2 year old.
